Tournaments Types
Multi-table Poker Tournaments
A multi-table tournament is a poker tournament that consists of two or more tables. In these multi-table poker tournaments players are often moved to other tables as players are eliminated. This keeps the amount of players at each table as balanced as possible. While we try to make sure that players stay to their original position relative to the dealer button when they move, players can sometimes get moved from a blind position to another blind position.
Sit & Go
Sit & Go tournaments do not begin at a set scheduled start time but will begin when enough players have registered. Once the required number of players has been reached or the table(s) is full, each player will be notified when the tournament is about to start. Sit & Go tournaments are usually smaller than standard multi-table tournaments.
Heads-up
These are tournaments that are played by two players. This type of match is known as a Heads-up match or tournament. A Heads-up Shoot-out format is a heads-up combined with a multi-table tournament. In this type of tournament you play against one player at a time until you either win or are eliminated from the whole tournament. These types of tournaments are a great way to improve your end-game skills.
Add-on & Re-buy Tournaments
Some poker tournaments allow you to make a Re-buy or Add-on during a predetermined time period in the tournament. An Add-on tournament means that you can buy more chips to add to your stack during the first portion of the tournament with the money you pay going into the prize pool. A Re-buy tournament also allows you to buy back into a tournament should you be knocked out before a certain period of time.
Freeze-out
Freeze-outs are a type of poker tournament and involve players making a single buy-in and being eliminated when they lose all their chips. As players are eliminated the tables are combined with other tables until there is one final table and ultimately there is one player left with all the chips.
Shoot-out
Shoot-out poker tournaments have a certain number of players competing on different tables. The tournament is broken down into rounds with players competing to beat everyone at their table to advance to the next round. For example in Round 1 players will compete until there is only one person left at each table. In round 2 the winners from round 1 play each other until there is one player left with all the chips. A Shoot-out tournament can have between two (Heads-up) or up to 10 players on each table competing over one or more rounds.
Satellites
Satellite tournaments are qualifier events where the prizes are entries into other larger tournaments with bigger buy-ins and larger prize pools. Satellites can also award entry into other satellites. A player could turn a smaller buy-in for a satellite into a big win at a much larger tournament by winning ever increasing satellites. All satellite tournaments end when all players have won or qualified for their prizes.
